Sleep Behaviour Disorder Linked to Brain Disease
Researchers at the University of Toronto examine the idea that neurodegeneration might first affect areas of the brain that control sleep before attacking brain areas that cause more common brain diseases like Alzheimer's. Read more.

Five New Projects Announced through the Canada Brain Research Fund
With brain diseases, disorders and injuries representing a leading cause of disability in the Canadian population, the federal government created the Canada Brain Research Fund. The fund will support Canadian neuroscience research and advance knowledge and treatment of brain disease and mental disorders, as well as supporting the Brain Canada Foundation, which raises matching funds from private donors and charitable contributions. Pain Curbs Sex Drive in Female Mice, but not in Males
Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers from McGill University and Concordia University in Montreal found that pain from inflammation greatly reduced sexual motivation in female mice in heat - but had no such effect on male mice. According to Dr. Pfaus, sex differences in pain reactivity open new doors to understanding how sexual responses are organized in the brain. Read more.

Study Identifies a New Way Brain Cells Die in Alzheimer's Disease
New research by the University of Calgary's Hotchkiss Brain Institute and published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), challenges conventional thinking about how brain cells die in Alzheimer's disease. The findings demonstrate a previously unknown mechanism by which the cells die and will help lead researchers in new directions for treating the degenerative brain disease. Read more.

Mental Health Centre Launches Website for Seniors with Depression
Baycrest launches a website for its mental health centre in an effort to reach out to the many seniors suffering from depression. "This website helps visitors understand late-life depression in a way that is friendly, empowering and positive," says Dr. Robert Madan, Baycrest's Chief of Psychiatry. Read more.

Research Study on Hockey Players and Concussion

Learning New Ideas Alters Brain Cells
Published in Nature Neuroscience, a University of British Columbia research shows that learning stimulates our brain cells in a manner that causes a small fatty acid to attach to delta-catenin, a protein in the brain. The research shows that this biochemical modification is essential in producing the changes in brain cell connectivity associated with learning. Read more.
