Remembering Dr. Oliver Sacks
The field of neurology lost one of its most engaging writers and thinkers with the passing of Oliver Sacks. He was able to engage audiences outside of his field with an approach that showed his readers the interconnectedness of life. Whether he explored how the brain functioned during mystical experience or related the story of “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” his ability to inspire a sense of wonder in all of us was truly his greatest gift. Read more about the man and his work here.

Changes in brain protein and new hope to treat depression
It's normal to feel down every once in a while but living with depression and the intense feelings of anxiety, hopelessness and negativity can be difficult for sufferers and for the people in their lives. A new study is providing some hope, showing an excess of a specific protein in the brains of patients with depression, hinting at new therapies for treatment. Read about the findings here.

It’s time to get ready to vote. Are you in control of your choice?
The campaigns are underway in both Canada and the USA and we are being bombarded with a constant stream of political ads and news stories. Most of us likely believe we already know how we’ll vote and are looking for the candidate or party that best reflects what we deem important. But, researchers have mapped a specific area of the brain that plays a role in balancing out the deeper reasons for our choice and first impressions of the candidate. So, how might you vote? How to improve student’s academic skills
With a new school year upon us, parents everywhere are looking for any way they can help their child achieve the necessary academic skills to be a successful student. Click on this slideshow to see how researchers across the globe are looking into mapping the neurobiological underpinnings to academic skills. As our understanding of brain plasticity increases, this research creates a lot of options to improve cognitive function for all students. For instance, a recent study with 6-8-year-old kids found that training them in spatial reasoning skills created marked improvements to their math skills; something the Right Turn exercise on BrainHQ does.

Experts on aging recommend yearly brain and memory tests
Many of us know that prevention is one of the best cures. And, that as we age our doctors tend to run more tests and screens on our bodies. The same holds true for cognitive issues that can develop as we age. Experts have begun recommending regular brain health screening, as early detection is key to reversing and treating some cognitive disorders. Read their recommendations here.

Brain Plasticity – the story of Jody
This story may sound unbelievable but a young girl is living proof of how the brain can rewire itself even when one hemisphere is removed. A drastic surgery to help control epileptic seizures was undertaken, and yet because of brain plasticity she is able to function normally. Watch her incredible story and marvel at how the human brain can adapt to anything.

Autism and gender difference
When we think about autism spectrum disorders we often picture a laundry list of specific behaviours such as repetitive motion, narrow interests and inflexibility with routine. Now, the question you should ask is who do you picture as suffering from autism spectrum disorders, a boy or a girl? The likelihood is that you are picturing a male patient, as boys are still more commonly diagnosed than girls. Researchers are now finding that there is a difference in how autism affects and presents across gender lines. Learn more about the behavioural and brain differences here.

How your boss can damage your brain
When you go to work, do you feel excited and ready to jump into the unknown? Or, do you feel like you’re just putting in hours with a set of golden handcuffs keeping you there? Research is showing that leaders who steer a workplace because they trust everyone to reach a shared goal, are actually benefitting the brain health of employees. On the other side, autocratic leaders who demand specific processes be followed and solve every crisis with a tightening of structure, rules and more processes create a workplace ripe for shutting down cognitive function. See how your boss measures up here.

Cut Your Crash Risk by 50%
Your brain is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment when you get behind the wheel of a car. As we age, our reaction times slow down and our field of vision decreases. This means our safety on the road is also reduced. By spending only 10 hours doing the engaging driving cognitive training program you can save your life and the lives of others on the road!
