During this pandemic, the world has been at a standstill, but we’ve seen a surge in brain training with BrainHQ. Whether it’s because people are experiencing a pause in life that is allowing them to reflect on the importance of their health or because people are simply finding more time for training, we do hope that this awareness will grow into a healthy practice that continues throughout people’s lives. Living with dementia or other neurological conditions can really diminish one’s quality of life!

For those of you who still don’t have full access to BrainHQ, we’re doing our part by offering you $35 ($30 US) to spend towards a subscription for yourself or towards a meaningful gift to give to someone you care about.

With 2020 coming to a close, I can’t express enough our gratitude for your help with raising public and organizational awareness about brain health and fitness. We look forward to another fruitful year working with you.

We wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season!

Kind regards,
Frieda Fanni

Uncovering a hidden network
Findings from an intriguing study are adding to our growing understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. Scripps Research scientists have discovered a previously unknown process that contributes to synapse loss—the main reason for memory loss and cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s. One of the most fascinating findings of this study teaches scientists that they have to be on the lookout for pathways and relationships in our biochemistry that previously went unnoticed. Find out about the hidden network this study has uncovered here.

Baby’s breath
There is always magic in the air when a baby is born, and much of what makes certain elements happen during and after birth remains shrouded in mystery. One of these unexplained phenomena is a baby's first breath – the magical moment a baby's oxygen switches from being delivered through the mother and her placenta to being taken over by the baby's brain and lungs. Scientists from the University of Virginia and the University of Alberta are analyzing this crucial moment in a child's first moments of life, to see if they can find important insights into sudden infant death syndrome. Innocent bystanders
With traumatic brain injury or disease, people can suffer from temporary but severe loss of cognitive function. In some cases, the injury or disease impacts just a small number of brain cells but causes a chain reaction that temporarily halts the activity of “bystander” cells. In a new study, scientists have discovered the reason for this response, and it is surprising, as it points to an often overlooked cell. Learn more about this study, the cell involved, and the possible evolutionary reasons for this response here.

The power of words
Now more than ever, we’re confronted with fake news and disinformation. Teasing apart the factual from the possible (or even fictional) is vital. Linguists have long understood that the brain responds in different ways to different words. Less clear has been our understanding of the distinctions the brain makes in processing information that expresses fact compared to that expressing possibility. A recent study examined this. The results might surprise you. Read more here.

The missing link
Stress-induced infertility can be heartbreaking for those trying to have children. For years, scientists have pondered the possible link between infertility and chronic stress. Researchers in New Zealand have recently found this missing link by using cutting-edge transgenic techniques. In doing so, they have answered a question that remained stubbornly unanswered for many years, and they are inspiring novel ways of treating stress-induced infertility. Learn what the missing link is here.

Your Brain Holds the Key to Safer Driving!
Your brain is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment when you get behind the wheel of a car. As we age, our reaction times slow down and our field of vision decreases. This means our safety on the road is also reduced. By spending only 10 hours doing the engaging driving cognitive training program you can save your life and the lives of others on the road! Learn more here. Looking for a Driving Cognitive Training course? Click here.
